Caring for hand block-printed cotton

Natural dyes and handwoven cotton reward a little care. Treated well, these pieces last for years and soften beautifully with age.

Washing

• Hand wash in cold water with a mild, natural detergent.
• Wash separately for the first two or three washes — natural dyes can release a little colour at first. This is normal and settles quickly.
• Do not soak, and do not use bleach or harsh detergents.
• If you must machine wash, use a delicates bag on the coldest, gentlest cycle.

Drying

• Hang dry in the shade. Direct sunlight fades natural dye.
• Do not tumble dry — it shortens the life of the cotton.
• Dry inside out to protect the print.

Ironing & storage

• Iron on medium heat while slightly damp, inside out.
• Store folded in a dry place. Avoid plastic bags for long periods — cotton needs to breathe.

A note on natural dye

Slight fading and softening over time is characteristic of naturally dyed, hand-printed cloth. Many people find the pieces get better with wear.
